Abu Ghraib 감옥에서 저질러진 미군의 더러운 짓에 대한 파문이 커간다.
오늘 The Christian Science Monitor에 실린 관련기사인 Abu Ghraib abuse coverup은 그 동안의 사건 전개과정과 이에 대한 각언론사의 보도내용들을 자세히 다루고 있다. 이사건을 보도한 CBS는 이미 4월14일 방송계획을 준비하고 있었는데, 외부의 간곡한 호소에(?) 의해 늦추고 있다가 문제의 사진들이 다른 매체를 타고 퍼져 나가자 뒤늦게서야 방송을 내보냈다고 한다.

"Two weeks ago, 60 Minutes II received an appeal from the Defense Department, and eventually from the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Richard Myers, to delay this broadcast -- given the danger and tension on the ground in Iraq. 60 Minutes II decided to honor that request, while pressing for the Defense Department to add its perspective to the incidents at Abu Ghraib prison. This week, with the photos beginning to circulate elsewhere, and with other journalists about to publish their versions of the story, the Defense Department agreed to cooperate in our report." from mediachannel.org

인터넷에 돌아다니는 관련 사진(출처 : newyorker.com)을 보면 수치심과 공포감에 떨고 있을 포로들 앞에서 장난치는 미군들을 볼 수 있다. 사람이 할 짓이 정말 아니다. 짐승만도 못한 놈들...

덧붙임 : 일명 Taguba Report 라는 문서의 전문이 공개되었다. 그 중 미군이 수감자를 대상으로 한 짓을 보면

6. (S) I find that the intentional abuse of detainees by military police personnel included the following acts:

a. (S) Punching, slapping, and kicking detainees; jumping on their naked feet;

b. (S) Videotaping and photographing naked male and female detainees;

c. (S) Forcibly arranging detainees in various sexually explicit positions for photographing;

d. (S) Forcing detainees to remove their clothing and keeping them naked for several days at a time;

e. (S) Forcing naked male detainees to wear women’s underwear;

f. (S) Forcing groups of male detainees to masturbate themselves while being photographed and videotaped;

g. (S) Arranging naked male detainees in a pile and then jumping on them;

h. (S) Positioning a naked detainee on a MRE Box, with a sandbag on his head, and attaching wires to his fingers, toes, and penis to simulate electric torture;

i. (S) Writing “I am a Rapest” (sic) on the leg of a detainee alleged to have forcibly raped a 15-year old fellow detainee, and then photographing him naked;

j. (S) Placing a dog chain or strap around a naked detainee’s neck and having a female Soldier pose for a picture;

k. (S) A male MP guard having sex with a female detainee;

l. (S) Using military working dogs (without muzzles) to intimidate and frighten detainees, and in at least one case biting and severely injuring a detainee;

m. (S) Taking photographs of dead Iraqi detainees.
