스탠포드 심리학과 명예 교수인 Philip G. Zimbardo의 Power turns good soldiers into 'bad apples' 이라는 글을 읽어 보았다. 그는 이라크에서 일어난 최근의 사태에 대해 본인이 학생들을 대상으로 수행하였던 Stanford Prison Experiment의 결과를 바탕으로
Should these few Army reservists be blamed as the "bad apples" in a good barrel of American soldiers, as our leaders have characterized them? Or are they the once-good apples soured and corrupted by an evil barrel? I argue for the latter perspective after having studied the psychology of evil for many decades.라고 말한다. 이번 사건의 주역들은 착한 미군중에 일부 못된 몇 명이 아니고 원래는 착한 사람들이 그러한 환경에서 그렇게 변해갔다는 것이고, 실제로 학생들을 대상으로 한 그의 실험에서도 그는 같은 행동양식을 관찰할 수 있었다고 한다. 전쟁, 권력, 환경 등이 그들을 황폐한 인간으로 변모시켰다는 일리있는 주장이다. 나이 칠순을 넘긴 노교수이지만 마지막 글을 보면 이 시대의 진정한 양심있는 지식인의 역할이 무엇인지 잘 보여 주고 있다.
It is time for all Americans to reflect on the justification for continuing the war in Iraq that is killing, maiming, and demeaning our young men and women who have been put in harm's way for spurious reasons. Before more of our youth are corrupted, perhaps the time has come to empty out the vinegar of needless war that has filled that evil barrel.
