보스톤 글로브지의 "The unwinnable war" 이라는 글을 보고 (via Informed Comment) '부시가 진실을 이야기했고 그의 말이 옳았다'라는 말의 의미를 몰라 관련 기사를 찾아 보았다.
부시는 지난 8월 31일 National Convention American Legion에서 "우리는 이길 겁니다" 라고 말을 바꾸었지만 전날 NBC Today show에 나와 사회자(Matt Lauer)의 질문에 대해서는 회의적인 대답을 했다.
NBC's Matt Lauer asked Bush, "Do you really think we can win (the war on terror)?"직설화법으로 유명한 부시이지만, 이렇게 말하는 것을 보면 그가 벌려 놓은 작금의 일들이 얼마나 복잡하게 돌아가는지를 알 수 있다. 반면에 건수를 잡은 경쟁자는 Kerry는"I don't think you can win it, but I think you can create conditions so that those who use terror as a tool are less acceptable in parts of the world."
With the right policies, this is a war we can win, this is a war we must win and this is a war we will win.이라며 필승을 외치고 있으니... 세상 돌아가는 일 모를 일이다.
둘이 뭐라 하던 분명한 진실은 James Carroll이 말한 것처럼 "... the main outcome of the war is clear. We have defeated ourselves." 이다.
